Healthy Lunch Recipes For Kids

Previously I wrote about school lunch ideas, so it seems fair to complete the lunch box with some simple recipes for easy desserts. Many children's sweet tooths can be satisfied by a piece of fresh fruit, but many the great finale to lunch is a simple little treat to make their day. Because kids have different palates, I included two different types of treats.

Here are a few of our favorite bar recipes that are not too sweet, quite nourishing and they transport well. For best results, store them in airtight containers in your refrigerator.

Kids In The Kitchen

This recipe is really good for those who keep prepared granola cereal on hand for breakfast. And it is so easy the kids can even throw it together.

Simply Granola Bars

Ingredients:

3/4 cup melted butter or margarine
1/3 cup brown sugar (omit if granola is very sweet)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 eggs
4 cups granola cereal

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a mixing bowl, mix together melted butter and sugar. Add vanilla, salt and eggs. Beat until smooth. Stir in granola and press into a greased 9x13 baking dish. Bake in oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until well set. Cool and cut into bars.

These are an absolute real treat and especially nice if you have made a strawberry or peach jam during the summer.

In this following recipe, carob powder is used. Carob is often called 'the chocolate substitute." It makes baked goods dark and moist. It is made from the pod of the carob tree, also known as St. John's bread. It is low in fat, high in protein and minerals.

Carob-Nut Brownies

Ingredients:

2/3 cup softened butter or margarine
2/3 cup honey
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup carob powder
1 cup unbleached flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup hot water
1 cup chopped walnuts

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and honey. Beat in eggs and vanilla. In another bowl combine carob powder, flour, baking powder and salt. Stir into butter mixture. Add hot water and walnuts. Stir well. Spread into a lightly greased 8 inch square baking pan. Bake in oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool and cut into squares.

Metaphysical Training - Workshops and Seminars

Find Metaphysical Training in the United States and Canada. With the expansion of alternative and healing arts schools, it is only natural that metaphysical training workshops and seminars have too, evolved. Today, individuals can enroll in a number of metaphysical training classes that entail studies in energy healing (i.e. reiki, chakra balancing, etc.) or in a variety of other fascinating topics.

Some metaphysical training workshops teach techniques in how to "hone-in" to psychic abilities; fine-tuning innate ways to reveal hidden talents. Other metaphysical training programs may be more comprehensive in nature, instructing in meditation, spirituality and yoga.

Kids Workshop

While many metaphysical and alternative healing schools provide metaphysical training and seminars, a number of these enlightening programs are sometimes conveyed through public community and learning centers. For example, there are a few instructional opportunities for individuals to learn about kinesiology (an energetic form of muscle testing). Though this is commonly used in conjunction with an assortment of massage therapies, it is also facilitated as an energy healing instrument.

Metaphysical training seminars also exist as introductory lessons in spiritual mysticism, shamanism, distance healing, higher philosophy, and other diverse subject matter. An intriguing metaphysical training course that one might choose may be in symbolism and prophesizing - for instance, if you've ever thought about reading Runes, the Tarot or discovering hidden secrets through remote viewing, then there are metaphysical workshops that allow you to learn more about these unique forecasting tools.

Some metaphysical training seminars are great for those seeking to improve mind-body-spirit awareness. Within these courses of study, are defining wisdoms of universal laws and human interaction with these laws. In addition, metaphysical training workshops may lead to professional certificates of completion, as well as continuing education credits.* (CE's may be applied to spiritual theology, holistic healing arts, and metaphysical healing arts.)

In general, if you've ever wanted to know what makes the world around you tick, paranormal phenomena, how energy transforms, or basic quantum physics - then participating in one of several metaphysical training classes may afford you with the knowledge you've been seeking.

If you (or someone you know) are interested in finding metaphysical training, let career training within fast-growing industries like massage therapy, cosmetology, acupuncture, oriental medicine, Reiki, and others get you started! Woodworking Tools For the Home Workshop

Home Woodworking Shop

Following the plain directions herein given, anyone using ordinary care can produce substantial, home-made pieces of furniture of which he may justly feel proud.

Kids Workshop

Some simple pieces are detailed-very well worth while making, though easy of construction. Other pieces are more complicated, calculated to tax the skill and ingenuity of the most experienced craftsmen. All of them will be found to be attractive, sturdy, and practical. They will furnish very enjoyable and profitable work for the amateur craftsman, and will solve for a good many carpenters that old problem- what to do in dull seasons.

In the pieces selected, there is no sequence of models, each description, with its accompanying instructions, being complete in itself, so that the craftsman may begin work on any piece he chooses.

How To Outfit the Home Shop With Woodworking Tools

At no time has there seemed to be so much earnest interest taken in handicraft work for the home shop by boys and men, professionals and amateurs, as at present. One can hardly enter a home without finding there enthusiasts who are anxious not only to make known the various interesting hand-made pieces contained therein, but also to introduce him to the place- or workshop, as he proudly calls it-in which the owner does his work and in which he finds much pleasure and interest.

That this interest in manual work is making itself widely known, is evidenced by the fact that far-sighted and progressive architects are putting into their house plans rooms which they choose to call "workshops."

The workshop is situated in a desirable location on the first floor, convenient to the living room, and is intended for the lighter types of home work. It can be used also as a study or a sewing room.

Woodworking Tools

In regard to the tools that should properly go to fit up a home shop for woodworking purposes, the beginner should understand that it is best to have a few tools, and those good ones, rather than to stock up on a lot of cheap ones. A cheap tool that will not "keep an edge" is a poor investment from any point of view. It is not necessary to purchase all the tools listed here at once. They can be procured as needed. However, we have listed only those which will be almost a necessity; and, as most firms make liberal discounts on quantities purchased, one who has the money to spare will be making good interest on the money invested if he buys all at one time.

First the bench. If one wishes to have everything of the best in appearance as well as in usefulness, he can purchase a cabinet-worker's bench for almost any price he cares to pay-the price depending on the size and quality. An excellent bench, with a top made of 2 1/4-inch maple strips glued up to prevent warping, having a length of 78 inches and a width of 24 inches, can be easily made. A smaller size, 22 by 54 inches, can be made with a rapid-acting vise.

A rapid-acting vise, while not a necessity, is a great saver of time. A person who has never used one should investigate before purchasing a vise of the old kind.

The person of an economical turn of mind may easily and cheaply put up his own bench. He should build it to the wall, so placing it as to bring his light upon the work in hand.

A plank of oak 2 inches by 12 inches should be used for the front of the top. The rest of the top may be made of one-inch stock "furred" up to the same level as the plank. A vise, such as is found on carpenters' benches, can be made. The fixtures can be purchased for about sixty cents.

When it comes to the question of purchasing tools, the greatest latitude must be allowed. The following list represents tools which will be found absolutely necessary for ordinary cabinet work:

1-Jack-Plane, 2-inch bit.

1-Boxwood Marking

1-6-inch Try-Square.

Gauge.

1-10-inch Swing Ratchet

1-6-inch T-Bevel.

Brace, ball-bearing.

1-6-inch Dividers.

1-12-ounce Claw Hammer.

1-All-bristle Brush.

1-Hickory Mallet.

1-Oil Stone, fine, 6 by 2

1-6-inch Screwdriver. by 1 inch.

1-Oil Can.

1-10-inch Back-Saw.

1-26-inch Rip Saw.

1-Spokeshave.

To these might be added a Smooth Plane, Jointer, Block Plane, and Compass Saw.

Auger Bits can be bought as needed. A full set is convenient, though hardly necessary. A Nail Set, Countersink, Steel Square, and four Bar Cabinet Clamps will be needed. Also a Combination Plane, for making rabbets, grooves, etc.

The cost of this outfit of tools will not be so great as one might think, when purchased as a whole. Some firms have cabinets in stock, upon which they make special prices, in which the list of tools is not far different from the above. It is well to investigate their quality-only high-grade tools should be purchased. If you are not informed, ask someone who is. You may depend upon it that the kind your carpenter friend uses and will recommend will be satisfactory.

There can be no satisfactory work done with dull tools. A grindstone will be needed. The kind that is run with the feet is best, as it leaves both hands free to hold the tool.

A miter box is very convenient, and will save much time-and possibly material-in the hands of an amateur.

Of course, we might add to these many other conveniences. We know one suburbanite who has a lathe, power saw, etc., run by an electric motor. He spends no more upon this hobby of his than his neighbor does upon golf, and in the end has beautiful pieces which his children will be glad to treasure after he is gone. Nor is this all there is to it. He has two growing sons who find their place of pleasure and recreation in this same shop. The fellowship of father and sons is "good to look upon" in this day when so many fathers have "no time" to give to their sons, who, having nothing else to do, are apt to spend their time on the streets, running wild, causing trouble for law-abiding citizens who are so unfortunate as to live within the range of their depredations.

Helping Children to Discover the Joy of Reading

Encouraging children to read can often prove to be a difficult task. This is why it is important to help children to discover the joy in reading. This article discusses different techniques to assist this to happen.

Bringing a book to life will certainly encourage a child to read. Reading can also be used as bonding time for a child and parent; which will also encourage a child to read. As long as they enjoy the experience and are not given reading as a punishment or a chore they will benefit and find the joy in reading. This will subsequently help them to develop. There are many ways to do this, some of which are more effective than others. Please read on to discover the implicating factors I have found to be beneficial.

Kids Workshop

To keep a child's brain active their imaginations need to be inspired. Research has proven that children develop faster through play. It can be hard to get a child to love reading that is why it is important to choose the right books. It is beneficial to correspond the interest and hobbies the child has to the books they are offered. The more relevant to their tastes the more enjoyable it will be and the more joy the reading will become. The hobbies and interests your child has could well be marketed by a subscription or series of reading materials. This is perfect for on-going enjoyment of literature.

The time and timing in which your child reads is also important. It is known that a child will absorb information if it is read before bed. It can also spark imaginative and positive images for dreams. Bed time is also a relaxed and comfortable time to delve whole into a book. A child will of course not enjoy reading during dinner time, while a parent is vacuuming or over breakfast.

It is important that for a child to enjoy reading the correct atmosphere must be set. Maybe a special fun room full of books could be available. If not, maybe a little special reading space where a child can enjoy being. Fun colours and shapes, sparking creativity would be helpful. It is important that it is quiet at the time your child is reading. It is said that you mustn't choose a book by its cover but where children are concerned it is important that the cover is colourful, fun, sparks interest and is engaging.

It is important also, that children can physically see parents and other adults reading for pleasure. It is a researched fact that children act as their role models do. Consequently that is usually the parents so it is important that parents read regularly and a child is witness to that.

Reading with children makes them discover the joy of reading as they enjoy spending time with parents. They feel special and are proud when they get compliments for their reading. It is also a conversation starter and can develop all sorts of understanding for all aspects that are within the themes of the book. A book can also inspire other enjoyable activities as a development of the book itself. Spending personal time with your children will make them feel special and they will appreciate that they are able to share something.

Visiting libraries can often be a fun and enjoyable experience for children. There are usual fun interactive workshops and activities taking place with children at certain days of the week. Children certainly discover the joy of reading on these as they tend to meet other children, make friends and appreciate their special treat.

It can also be more enjoyable if your child if they are encouraged to interact with older siblings. It is perfect to involve the whole family in reading games. Understandably there will be an array of reading levels but the concept will be the same. Maybe the older ones could read to the younger ones or visa versa. Shared reading in groups is related to enjoyment and development so this is definitely worth a try.

All in all, in conclusion, as long a parent praises children's efforts they will be filled with joy and will be eager to read. Reading should never be used as a punishment. It must always be thought of something fun and enjoyable. To help a child discover the joy of reading is certainly the right path to success.

Relationship Advice - Love is Patient (Part 3 in Love Workshop Series)

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway. --Kent M. Keith

Love is Patient

Kids Workshop

How do you react when you are inconvenienced? How do you handle annoyances? Every day we are faced with new challenges that test our endurance and patience. Through patience we have the opportunity to express love for imperfect people and for life despite all its challenges and difficulties.

Patience is a passive demonstration of love. It is not what you do as much as how you respond to people or situations. Patience is...calmly enduring an inconvenience; not reacting impulsively when a decision needs to be made; hoping in the midst of opposition; staying faithful and believing despite delay; submitting without resistance when it is the best option; and, gracefully accepting hardships that cannot be changed.

There is a calm quality to patience. When you are patient, you are in no hurry. You are able to wait for as long as is necessary. You persist in believing without giving up. Your temper is under control. And you are not disturbed by inconveniences and annoyances.

Patience communicates love. It says:

o I love you despite your imperfections.

o I am willing to wait because some things are worth waiting for.

o I will go out of my way if it will help you.

o I will allow you to do things at your own pace, not mine.

o I will think things through before making a decision.

o I will not give up on you; I believe in you.

o I will accept you the way you are and not try to change you.

o I will respect your beliefs and opinions although they differ from mine.

Patience clearly communicates love in a very special way. Patience is commonly said to be a virtue. It is a quality that can be developed and practiced by every one of us.

REFLECTION

o How understanding and tolerant am I with people in my life?

o Do I persist in the face of difficulties or setbacks? Explain.

o How do I manage times of delay and waiting?

o What tries my patience more than anything else? How do I respond?

o What do I expect from others that keeps me from being patient with them?

o On a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being "completely" and 0 being "not at all" how would I rate my overall level of patience?

o Is there someone in my life that I need to be more patient with? What can I do differently?

EMPOWERING THOUGHTS & AFFIRMATIONS

Life is filled with obstacles and imperfect people that hinder our plans, slow us down, and annoy us.

I can accept life as being imperfect. I can allow myself and others to have flaws.

One does not increase in love. One merely gets rid of one's hate. ~Lester Levenson>/i>

The power of love is amazing and never-ending. It can motivate, energize, inspire, and strengthen. Love can do in a person what nothing else can do. Love has the power to revive and change lives, restore relationships, and bring healing. All else may fail, but love never fails. ~Krystal Kuehn

Teaching Children Responsibility

What does it mean to teach your children responsibility? Every parent has a different answer and a different expectation of when and how their child will assume personal responsibility. One thing is for sure and that is that responsibility must be taught. It is not a natural skill, but it can be learned at any age. You do not become responsible when you are mature, but rather you become mature when you are responsible.

Four variables in this exciting venture;

Kids Workshop

1. Your child (learning style, age, motor skills, interest, hot buttons or incentives)

2. Your expectations (perfection or ever-learning, do you punish for the truth?)

3. Your example (use the 4 r's, recognize, remorse, restitution and resolve to correct
mistakes)

4. Consistency and follow-through (natural and logical consequences)

Outward responsibility deals with everyday things (life skills) chores, brushing teeth,
returning videos on time. These are habits that make us productive and reliable.

Inward responsibility deals with attitudes, beliefs and values. This is where we look at
the heart. It means admitting mistakes, being unselfish, caring for other people's health,
property and feelings.

2-step process:

1. Teach them the skill until it becomes a habit and then eventually it will become
automatic action. Automatic action is action without conscious thought or
planning. This is the difference between pre-decisions and situational ethics. For
example, clearing your plate from the table, brushing your teeth, putting your bike
away. You don't have to decide what to do every time.

2. Praise the attitude, performance and effort. Use natural and logical consequences
to reinforce the lesson. "Thanks for picking up your toys without being asked. It
makes it easier for the whole family to maneuver when we don't have to step over
toys on the floor."

You cannot expect a 35-year-old job from a 10-year old. You also cannot expect a 10-
year-old job from a 10-year old who isn't clear what is expected of him. We will have to
occasionally jump in and help them do an unpleasant task, but not do it for them.

Voice and Choice: The more the child has the opportunity of "owning" the decision or
problem, the more he/she will learn. The purpose of allowing natural consequences to
occur and of designing logical consequences is to encourage children to make responsible
choices, not punish them. This method permits a child to choose and then to be
accountable for the decision whether it comes out well or not. Most children, when
permitted to make poor choices, learn from the consequences. The most effective method
of teaching is for you to remain matter-of-fact and non-punishing. This means separating
the deed from the doer. If you were trying to teach your child a new skill, such as piano
or tennis, you would probably be patient. You would expect and accept some mistakes.

Just regard teaching responsibility the same way. Regard slipups or wrong choices as a
learning experience rather than a personal affront on your ability as a parent or teacher
and everyone will be happier, more cooperative and responsible.

News Production Workshop - The Underlying Facts

The term "News Production Workshop" refers to the newsroom which has to do with the sum total of activities in the newsroom.

News itself is a product of so many hands and it is called a bulletin. In the news room there is the newsroom personnel, the editorial board, the editorial meeting, the editorial policy and the News production process. Television News by its concept is a thing of beauty and the art you pick from the television that compliments the technology. Newsroom is the workshop, where things are created, bringing things that are nothing into something.

Kids Workshop

The reporter in the newsroom is the creator, that is, he or she is responsible for creating news. Those involved in the news workshop are the boss, his assistants, and the equipment. The bulletin is the last product of the newsroom. The production process of the news begins with the Assignment Editor who assigns the reporter to a beat. The reporter develops or produces a report (a film or a non-film story) and submits this to the Duty Editor who proof-reads and edits for technicalities or news-worthiness. The report is then given to a Production Secretary who types out a clean copy.

Again, the Editor will proof-read for possible typing errors, after which he assembles and aligns it with the other stories to make the day's bulletin. Meanwhile, if it is a film story (for TV), the tape (or disc) containing the shots or rushes is taken to the Audio Visual Film Editor who edits the pictures to suit the story. While the final edited material is taken to the Transmission Controller (TC), the scripts which are now assembled in the bulletin are handed over to the Duty News Caster who rehearses it and casts it live on air.

The telecast itself is guided and assisted by the Studio (Floor) Manager, Studio Engineers, Cameramen and other studio hands. In the Transmission Control Unit, the Newscast is directed by the Transmission Controller (TC) and assisted by the Sound and Vision Mixers.

The News Production Process is concluded with a Post-Mortem analysis. Post-Mortem is a medical term that is borrowed into journalism to mean the final touch of the editorial crew. In journalism, Post-Mortem analysis refers to the meeting of all those involved in the production of the day's bulletin where they discuss or analyze the successes or otherwise of the day's News Production Process.

Graphically, the News Production Process follows in this order: Assignment Editor, Reporter, Editor, Production Secretary, Film Editor, News Editor, News Caster, Transmission Controller, and Post-Mortem. The process on radio is virtually the same except for the absence of visuals.

2. Ruins, ruins ruins. What is not to like about scrambling around ruins on a mountain top? Machu Picchu isn't the only ancient site, the ruins of Pisaq ramble all the way up the hillside with plenty of hidden nooks and crannies to explore, Saxsayhuaman on the hill above Cusco is the biggest fort of them all and a popular spot for local children to play football. Kuelap, in the north of Peru represents a huge fortress of little round houses on top of a mountain; a king's castle if ever there was one!

3. Lima. Don't skip the Peruvian capital if you visit with kids. For a fun way to see the main sights, hop on the open top bus tour of the city center. Lima's excellent galleries such as the MALI and MAC in Barranco have regular outdoor art activities for the whole family, and the cost is less than a dollar. The Malecon is 6 miles of parks on cliff tops overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Hire a bike for a traffic-free ride and spectacular views local paragliders. Near Lima airport is the fort of Callao and the modern, large city zoo. The zoo is arranged in three sections representing the coastal, mountain and jungle areas of Peru; best visited midweek to avoid the crowds.

4. Beaches. The far north of Peru has year round sunshine and warm weather. Mancora Beach attracts families from Peru and Ecuador but, for a quieter, village feel and calmer waters head to undeveloped Punta Sal. Older children will enjoy the surf and kite surfing in this part of the country, and parents will enjoy the fantastic seafood.

5. Animals. The wildlife isn't restricted to the jungle. Sea lions, penguins, boobies and dolphins can be spotted on short, fun boat trips near Lima, at Pucusana, and Paracas National Park. Paddington did indeed come from Peru and you can spot him at the Chaparri Resrve outside Chiclayo. Any trip into the countryside in Peru will bring you close to chickens, guinea pigs, horses, llamas, alpacas, strange hairless dogs and a multitude of hummingbirds.

6. Outdoor activities. If you are visiting Cusco, then softer kid-friendly activities include horse riding in the Sacred Valley and rafting or paddling on inflatable canoes in the beautiful mountain scenery along the Urubamba River.

7. Nazca. See the real lines as featured in Indiana Jones. For lovers of all things gruesome, the deser Cementerio de Chauchilla is littered with mummified remains complete with skulls, hair and teeth. You can see a scale model of the Nazca lines behind the fascinating Maria Reiche Museum. At the Andres Calle Flores Workshop, Toni hosts a funny and informative workshop and kids can make their own Nazca style pots.

Wherever you travel in Peru, families are assured of a warm welcome from the child - loving Peruvians.

The Advantages Of Sending Kids To Summer Camps

The summer can be very long for city kids without entertainment. Planned activities will keep them occupied, can help them make friends, and give them a chance to learn new things. Long Island summer camps can even spark an interest in an activity that can eventually become a lifelong passion.

Children enrolled in a Long Island day camp program will blossom. Other advantages Long Island summercamp participants will benefit from include:

Kids Workshop

- Long Island day camps give kids an opportunity to develop their social skills.
- Children of all ages will make new friends at a Manhattan summer camp.
- Because of the diversity of participants, Queens summercamp members will learn about the different cultures in the world.
- At Long Island summer camps, children will be introduced to new activities, such as painting, dance, drama, or photography.
- Existing skills in computer, art, etc. can be further developed. The staff members at a Manhattan summer camp are skilled and very knowledgeable.

Interior Design For Children

Interior design for children is one of the most fun, delightful aspects of the business if you ask me. It is so fun because children are limitless as far as their creativity and imaginations are concerned. Whenever planning interior design for children, be sure to involve the children in the planning and-if you feel very brave, the implementation of your designs.

A good beginning point or theme for interior design for children is to start with any favorite activity or toy or even character of the child's interest. Remember that many items of interest to children are topics that will change with time so try to take advantage of these interests and favorites with accessories and changes that will be easy to replace in the future as their interests and needs change. If a child has an interest or a particular activity that they are very enthused about and they have a special request that would make the design very special to them, go for it as long as the parents are as enthusiastic as the child is. Also, forewarn them of any possible headaches they might experience changing it in the future when it comes time to redesign the space in order to accommodate the child's changing needs.

Kids Workshop

When choosing your color plan or schemes remember that interior design for children offers you unique opportunities to use bold or bright colors that would usually not be ideal for use in adult surroundings. Along the same lines, certain areas of the room would be more ergonomic to use as focal points then would in an adult's atmosphere. For example, a chalkboard or toy box might capture a child's attention more so then would a table or seating arrangement.

Another aspect of design that will vary from adult tastes when planning interior design for children would be the accessories that will be used to highlight and accentuate key features. Toys and collectibles make wonderful objects to use in this application. However, many times toys that are placed on display or for decoration are toys that the child would enjoy much more by being able to play with it rather then it actually being on display. You can solve this dilemma by either using old, unused toys that no longer captivate the child's interests or even by purchasing duplicates and allowing them to actually use one version of the toy and letting them know that the others are 'for looking only'.

Also, keep in mind that collectibles often times are of less significance to smaller children then are to adults so make sure that any item placed in a child's room is not of significant fiscal or sentimental value just in case!

Tying in interior design for children can be accomplished easily by purchasing one of millions of available bed treatments that is complimentary to the designs and themes used in the creation of the room layout as well as fitting in well with the accessories chosen. Many bed treatment packages come prepackaged with matching detailed sheets, a comforter, dust ruffle, and window coverings. These items can bring a room together in the greatest of all fashions and are an option in interior design for children that are obtainable by anyone looking to make a change.

Always remember when planning interior design for children that a child changes attitudes, opinions, and behaviors around every three years. Permanent changes of any type are a big no-no and practical, cost effective ones are ideal. A good furniture tip to remember when designing for kids is to buy reasonably priced, sound furniture that doesn't break the bank. Kids are even harder on furniture then they are on clothes! And most importantly to take into consideration when working with interior design for children--of course, HAVE FUN!!!

4 Step Training System - How to Teach Your Kids New Skills

Chores are an important part of daily life. Those mundane daily jobs that seem effortless for adults to tackle can seem like insurmountable tasks for some children. Membership in a family takes coordinated effort for a household to run smoothly. Each person has a role to play and jobs to perform.

While the roles can be quite fluid and the expectations for the level of performance may change from time to time, those routine jobs around the house still have to be done. The trash has to go out, the dishes have to be washed, and the beds still have to be made! When children are made to take part in the care of the everyday running of the house they learn skills that will serve them for a lifetime.

Kids Workshop

The best way to teach a new skill and to foster future independence is to break the work down in "chunks" or steps that the child can absorb. This prevents the child from feeling overwhelmed from information overload.

Good instruction starts with modeling of the new skill, guided teaching, and then is followed by lots of independent practice. Making the bed is a great place to start in the realm of chores and teaching responsibility.

The following is a 4 Step System that can be applied to any household chore and will produce positive results with your child moving toward assuming more personal responsibility.

1. Demonstrate: "This is the way I learned to make a bed. I will show you the method that has worked for me."

2. Assist: "How about we work together to make the bed? If you have any questions or can think of a better method, let me know and we will try it. What are the most important things to remember when you make a bed? Remember, I am your assistant today."

3. Supervise: "I have confidence in you. You really understand all the basics of how to make a bed so it looks good and feels comfortable. I am going to stand here by the door and if you need help or have a question you can ask me, but I think you have earned the right to say you are an "official bed maker."

4. Support: "It feels good to master a job doesn't it? I am proud to say that you have done a fine job and you now have "ownership" of making your own bed every morning for the rest of your life. Don't worry, it will become automatic action soon, and you won't even have to think about all the little parts of how to make a bed. I am going to do some of my own jobs now, but why don't we meet in the kitchen in a few minutes and have a special breakfast to celebrate your accomplishment?"

How long will it take for a child to master the skill and then "own" the task? This differs from child to child, based on age and the teaching adult's persistence. The answer is really "as long as the child takes to begin assuming personal responsibility." You may even need to do a refresher course occasionally.

While hospital corners may be a bit beyond the ability of most young children, fluffing the pillow, pulling the sheets up and spreading a simple comforter over the top of it all is definitely do-able! The goal is to get to automatic action and transfer the ownership of the task to the child.

Keep in mind that the less you do for your children, the more time you will have to do things with them.

Keeping Your Children Safe Outside

If you have children, you understand how important it is to keep them safe. If you live in a nice neighborhood, you want to be able to let your kids play outside while you make dinner and watch them from the window. However, if you are not right beside them, you cannot stop them fast enough from inside if they run into a street. If you want to make sure they are safe, you can look into CT fencing. Ct fences will keep your children in your backyard or front yard and you will not have to worry about them running into the street.

You should be able to let your children go outside if they are old enough without having to be there with them every second. If they are too young, you should always be with them unless you have a babysitter outside with them, but they have to grow up sometime and you probably have housework to do as well. If you do not feel safe letting them go out alone, then take them to the park or get a babysitter to play with them. One thing that will definitely make you feel better is having something that surrounds your yard to keep strangers out and your children in. That way you will know where they are at all times.

Kids Workshop

If your backyard is secluded and you live in a very safe neighborhood, you are probably more comfortable with the idea of having your kids out to play when you are getting things done inside. Although it is nice to get outside and play with them every once in a while, you cannot always make that happen. If you live in a neighborhood that is not as safe or your house is right off a busy street, it may be hard to let them go out by themselves. If this is the case, having a barrier installed would be a great idea.

Parents always worry about their children. It is a natural instinct because the job of a parent is to keep their children safe. If your children are really young, it is not a good idea to let them go out whether you have a secured area or not. They do not understand rules yet and should not be allowed to leave the area without you knowing. It is important that you are with your young children at all times when they are playing outside.

It is important for kids to play outside where there is fresh air and exercise. Instead of letting them watch television, make them go out while taking breaks from their homework. When they do go out alone, give them rules to follow and make sure they follow them by checking on them often. By getting them to do their homework early in the day, like right after school, they will have more time to play outside before it gets dark out. Especially in the winter, it gets dark very early so if you have to, get them to go out for an hour and then help them do their homework before dinner.

Keeping Your Kids Safe

While providing workplace violence prevention training workshops throughout Canada, I am frequently approached by parents concerned about their children's safety.

What should I say? - How should I say it? - When should I say it? - How much should I say?

Kids Workshop

Some parents attempt to scare their children into thinking about awareness and safety. Other parents avoid discussing personal safety at all, as they voice concern over making their children frightened or taking away their childhood innocence.

There is no one size fits all answer to all of this. Like many issues regarding the teaching of children, a work in progress approach is most beneficial. Having a one-time sit down chat or reading through a safety book with your child may be helpful but ultimately, for a number of reasons, may fall short in really enhancing our children's personal safety.

We can use Childhood Abduction as an example. Statistically the chance of a stranger abducting a child is quite remote. Much focus is spent on teaching kids to prepare for this possible though improbable event.

The fact is that childhood abuse is more likely to occur in the closer circles of family, friends, trusted professionals, neighbours and so on. So why is it that we spend so much time focussed on strangers when statistically we should be focussed on our inner circles?

Having said that, parents just want their children to be safe, so what can be done that will be effective? Some of the same skill sets that protect your child from strangers will also enhance your child's personal safety in situations nearer the home.

Early years: First of all, I am anticipating that your children under the age of 6 are always near you (in your sight) or in the care of someone that you have carefully done background checks on; who is safety focused (daycare, bus service, baby sitters etc.) If this is the case, stranger abduction is very unlikely. With this kind of diligent supervision, strategies for dealing with abduction need not be your training focus and realistically may also be a little beyond your child's comprehension.

In my opinion, parents at this stage should be talking with their children about "appropriate touch", personal boundaries and encouraging kids to communicate when they are not feeling comfortable about what someone said or did.

Talking with Strangers: My wife and I never discourage our children from saying hello to people and making small talk. An assertive child with good communication skills, who is in tune with his or her intuition, is less likely to become a victim. Once again anticipating that you or your child's caregivers are present during these moments takes care of the safety issue. This is simply an opportunity to discuss with your kids how they felt about the person they spoke to and perhaps what it was about the person they did not feel so good about. Remember this is a work in progress, not a one-time chat.

School Years: By about age six, children have been attending school or daycare for a little while. The potential exposure to unknown people is now present. In the school yard, children are usually supervised by a school designate, but how diligent is this person? Children go on field trips and play dates and may not have the close supervision that you provide at home. Awareness, planning, boundary setting, assessment and assertiveness are the key things for enhancing your child's personal safety. Children learn these critical concepts through observing their parents. If the parent isn't taking any steps to enhance their own personal safety, I would suggest the child is very unlikely to be able to either.

Awareness: Awareness is a critical characteristic of people's personal safety, for children and adults. It is unlikely for personal safety scenarios to arise out of nowhere. Warning signs are often presented and people often don't pick up on them and have no plans for how to respond.

Children learn to be aware of their surroundings by watching their parents. Do you look around when you are on the way out of the grocery store or en route to your vehicle (still enjoying the day but picking up on unusual or suspicious things)? Starting at the age of 3 - 4, you can talk about being aware (not frightened) as you walk with your child.

Planning: Running through scenarios with your child is very beneficial. This is similar to traffic safety review and fire / earthquake drills. For example you could ask your children about a scenario like this, "Let's say you're in the playground and an adult, you don't recognize, walks over towards you. What would you do? If he or she says such and such, how would you respond?" This is a good time to think about what you yourself would do in a similar situation. How can we advise our children, if we don't know what we say or do ourselves? Once again, our children are watching, and watching closely. They are always learning from us so try to think about your day to day actions as a template for how your children will likely act.

Assertiveness: This is an absolutely critical part of anyone's ability to stay safe. As you know, occasionally perpetrators will attempt to lure children into going with them saying such things as, "can you help me look for my puppy, do you like video games and other such questions. Parents tell their children to never go with strangers and inform them of these ploys; however, children may still go with this person because they don't want to be rude and they lack the assertiveness to say "no."

Simply telling the child to say no rather than demonstrating ongoing assertiveness will be of no benefit. So when someone knocks at your front door, do you simply open the door or do you say through the door, "who is it?" Saying I am not interested to a salesperson through the door is not rude, it's assertive and safer. Every knock at the door is a potential lesson for your child. Do you end sales phone calls politely and assertively or do you hum and haw and complain after finally hanging up? Another lesson!

Do you force your child to hug Auntie Glad or do you allow them the choice to say no? There are endless examples, but I think you understand where I am going with this.

Boundary Setting: The ability to say no is one example of boundary setting. Physical boundary setting is another very important thing for a child or adult to be able to do. Practice holding your hand up like a stop sign, fully extended while asking your spouse, friend or child to walk towards you from about 20 feet away. As soon as they take a step, raise your hand and say assertively "stay there please."

A reasonable person with no ill intentions will stop. If the person were to continue moving in, this would indicate to you or your child...danger. Now would be the time to make noise and run.

You can have fun and practice this routine with your child. So when you go back to, "what to do if someone approaches you at the playground", you can begin with a boundary and then have them say no to various requests. As your child gets older and more experienced, he or she will be able to understand the difference between a reasonable person having a normal non-threatening conversation and someone crossing boundaries making unreasonable requests. Having the ability to assess, trust intuition and set boundaries will assist your child throughout childhood and into adulthood.

Teaching children about personal safety is an ongoing process. There are life lessons happening on a daily basis that we can use as examples. Remember that the way you live your life is a model for how your children will live theirs. Children tend to benefit much more from the, "do as I do" approach as opposed to the, "do as I say" approach. Personal safety is important for everyone in the family.

Running a Candle Making Workshop - Soy Candles

Private Candle Making Parties & Demonstrations

I prefer these to normal "Candle Parties". I would rather have a group of people wanting to learn how to make candles rather than just watching me explain the benefits of Soy Candles. You can certainly still set up as if you were running a normal party plan. This will get participants excited about what they can make & buy.

Kids Workshop

I prefer to take bookings on a pre-paid basis. I don't charge a large amount, usually but at least I know my time and the candle making kit I provide is paid for before I get there.

The most enthusiastic hostesses are ones that have purchased from you already. Always promote the fact that you can conduct candle making classes/parties with all your sales.
Here are some simple steps to follow:

1/ Your hostess should invite 8-10 people over for coffee, cake and candle making. Remember they may invite 10, but 5 may turn up. This is why it is important to take bookings.
2/ The hostess is free. Guests are charged approx to cover the costs of the candle.
3/ While you have your wax melting, do your introduction to soy candles and show the guests how to prepare their containers.
4/ As this is an introduction, limit the fragrance and colour selection to a couple. You want to get their interest, not to a full blown class. (That's another opportunity)
5/ When the wax is ready, get the guests to pour their own candle.
6/ While the candle is cooling you have the opportunity to promote your own candles, what you have to offer in the way of products, kits, accessories etc.
7/ Have your order form, brochures and business cards available. Remember, the introductory class is simply a way to get their interest. What you do with it, is up to you.
The alternative to these simple classes is to conduct a full candle making class through an Adult Learning Centre, Neighbourhood House, etc

I also provide a simple Power Point presentation on CD, so that participants have the all the information they need to keep in touch.

Although the income from such candle making parties is not huge, I use them primarily to promote the benefits of SOY Candles and of course my business for soy candles.

Setting Up a Woodwork Workshop

Most people start "small" with a few tools to do jobs around the house - changing plugs, putting up a shelf - that kind of thing. DIY projects get bigger, and the number of hand tools acquired increases, plus that great workhorse the inevitable electric drill. A hobby develops and a work space is found. Rarely does someone suddenly decide to make rocking horses or something like that. So the big change comes with some event - retirement, kids moving out - or with a move of house - which means more room or a place that you didn't have before.

What and Where

Kids Workshop

The first things to sort are, what are you going to make, and have you now got somewhere to do it. The first indicates the amount of space you need, and the second, have you a garage, shed, basement or a spare room big enough. If you haven't room - whether to build something (plans on the right) or rent somewhere, and can you afford it. Most people want to stay at home for hobbies, but if starting a business prefer to be further away. Using a garage that also must house a car means having lots of mobile stuff that can be moved.

Size

What you are going to make also indicates how much room you need, and what type and number of machines you will use. Try to organise the space into areas for specific jobs, and remember to allow adequate space for the movements needed for the task - cramped conditions can be dangerous. Organise your tools into storage where you can easily find them - again it is possible to assign different tools to different areas of use. Many machines can be arranged on tables with wheels to allow for use and then return to storage out of the way. Power tools need adequate power sources, and while some hand tools can be used with extension leads, large fixed machine are better with their own supply.

Access

This is important both for getting new materials into the workshop and for removing the finished product. Working in a basement, or on the first floor, can cause access problem for materials and large workshop tools going in, and products coming out. Large sheet materials can be reduced in size before being taken into the workshop.

Noise

Many machines used are quite noisy, and can cause problems both within the home, and with your neighbours. The use of double glazing and lots of insulation in a shed or garage, will not only cut down the noise, but help with heating in the winter months. In a large workshop, with zones for specific jobs, it is possible to arrange things so that these areas are heated and lit only when being used.

Mess and Dust

Woodworking produces loads of off cuts, shavings, and sawdust including very fine stuff that floats in the air. This is both a health hazard and a fire risk - get a vacuum system and clear up - sawdust and shavings in the house do not usually go down well! Get a fire extinguisher to hand - better safe than sorry.

Marriage Workshops - Helping Save Your Marriage

When couples tie the knot, they promise each other to stay together for years, have a few children, a dog, a cat, big beautiful house with a white picket fence. The thought of splitting up or going your own separate ways or even DIVORCE... EXCUSE ME!!!, didn't even cross your mind.

The truth about marriage is that, its not always picture perfect or as exhilarating as you'd think. Marriages have problems too, just like the rest of us do. The struggles endured by married couples in life can make or break the relationship, but the problem of splitting up a marriage can be stopped in its tracks and conquered.

Kids Workshop

Oftentimes, the challenges couples face in life, can teach them a bit about themselves or each other, making them better, stronger and more enlightened individuals. A troubled marriage, entering a divorce is one such challenge, couples may face in their relationship. Despite the couples disastrous unforeseen misfortune, their marriage troubles can be saved by a marriage workshop. DIVORCE - some couples don't even see it coming - until its too late and it SMACKS them, square in the face and by the time, they shake off the shock and their blurred vision clears up - they've lost it all, the children, dog, cat, big house, the white picket fence and to rub salt into the deep wounds, they're behind with the alimony checks.

Marriage troubles usually begin with a little misunderstanding between the couple, then grows into a screaming match. Arguments over nothing important, vicious rows, doors being slammed, plates and glasses hurled across the room or against the walls, furniture smashed and destroyed, clothes thrown out on the street, one partner ignoring the other, annoyed, disgusted and hurt. This could develop into extreme hate, which has the chance to turn into sweet revenge. Ultimately this situation may lead to a costly divorce. Should couples be alert to the issues in their marriage and take action immediately to rectify the problem, a divorce or separation could be avoided.

Joining a marriage workshop is a good decision for couples to make, they can be helped to identify issues in their marriage and conquer them before they worsen. During the marriage workshop, couples are asked to explain their problems individually. A counselor may encourage couples to be straight up and honest with each other, no matter what happens, even if they start jumping up and down in frustration, argue, express anger or extreme hate, each spouse is advised to settle down, remain calm and listen to each others opinions and thoughts without any rude interruptions, shouting or offensive language. Each person is given plenty of time to explain themselves and talk about what they are feeling. Couples sharing their problems, during this part of the workshop, should be honest and from the heart.

Once the couples issues are out in the open, they are encouraged to deal with them, head on. Couples face their fears and share with the group, by speaking out and releasing their problems and pains, only then can the problems be solved. Workshops may take weeks to complete. Marriage workshops are not one day, magic bullet solutions for your marriage troubles. Lets get real here, the workshop will be completed, when the last partner or couple is good and ready to finish, not before. Time, understanding and patience is an essential quality, required by both the troubled couple and the counselor.

Sometimes couples are irresponsible and lazy and may make up some pitiful excuses as to why they can't attend the marriage workshop. Skipping sessions can hinder the couples attempt to rescue their marriage. Other institutions provide free marriage workshops to couples wishing to save their relationship. Couples can contact their local marriage counselors, to get more detail concerning the free workshops in their area. Surfing the internet will display workshops available in all districts. Marriage workshops require both couples to attend all sessions, so be prepared to turn up, keen, open minded and cooperative. By not attending or participating in the workshops, the marriage relationship will be doomed to fail.

Couples will need to learn or practice patience and understanding to overcome, problems affecting the relationship. Marriage workshops successfully save hundreds of families and their marriages from the brink of breaking up, so by you choosing to join a marriage workshop will help and assist you to fully understand marital related problems and ultimately bring the family together as a tight knit unit.

The children in the marriages that successfully complete the workshops, grow up to be responsible and cooperative individuals. The childrens lives return to normal and everybody moves on, however in time, they become beautiful people, who will be involved in the most loving, stable and successful marriage relationships around, all because they had two of the GREATEST PARENTS and best MARRIAGE ROLE-MODELS that have ever lived.

Kids - They're Not Going to Outlive Their Parents

After attending a fitness conference in Orlando, Florida, I keep realizing how much I am still learning. What an exciting weekend it was! Yet, after all the workshops that I attended, something one of the presenters said really resonated in my head. I wondered if it was true because it gave me some really torn feelings. He said,

"Our current generation of kids may be the first to not outlive their parents."

Kids Workshop

The reason I was torn with this statement was because on one hand, I thought, what a way to capitalize on new fitness programs for children. On the other hand though, I thought, has it really become so bad we now have to send them to professionals to make sure they are moving and eating right? I mean, growing up, kids were playing football, stick ball, jump rope, etc. on my block every day. You name it, it was being done. On many occasions my parents would be furious if I were to stay outside too long playing with my other friends. Yet everyday, it was what I was looking forward to do as soon as I got home from school and finished my homework. And then the summers were even better because we were out all day! As far as food was concerned, if I did eat fast food, it was only on the weekends. During the week I would eat whatever my mom prepared for breakfast and dinner and whatever school had for lunch. A lot of times I was eating as fast as possible so that I can meet friends, go to recess, or play outside.

So I did some further research into that statement and here is what I found:

31.9% of children and adolescents are overweight 16.3% of children and adolescents are obese Type 2 Diabetes has increased 10 fold in the past twenty years Over 8 million children have asthma, up 232% in the last forty years Cancer kills more kids than any other disease

Researchers believe that poor eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle are responsible for many of these issues. After finding all this out I am even more driven to fight the effects of poor eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle, not just in adults but in children too!

Here are two top tips that you and your family can use right now to get started on the path to a healthy and fit lifestyle:

Try to get in at least 20-30 minutes of activity per day as a family. Limit the amount of sugars and processed foods you and your family are taking in each day.

Remember that above all... Keep it fun!

A CNC Machine in Your Home Workshop

Forty years ago, in the world of big corporate manufacturing, computers started making their way into the factories. Computer Numeric Controlled (or CNC) machines, that ran off a stack of punch cards with intricate patterns of holes punched into them, ran huge milling machines and lathes. They were cumbersome, but fast, and each machine cost more than a nice house.

Fortunately, for you, the home craftsman, those days are gone. It is now entirely possible, practical, and affordable to own your own CNC router, CNC mill, CNC lathe, CNC laser cutter, or CNC plasma cutter. With only the most basic PC computer, a couple of hundred dollars worth of software, a similar investment in hardware and electronics, and your own ingenuity, YOU can have a CNC machine in your home workshop.

Kids Workshop

A CNC machine can be a great supplement to a hobby that you already have... like building model airplanes, model railroads, or woodworking. If you are into electronics, a small CNC router can etch and drill printed circuit boards. If you have kids at home, a CNC machine can be a terrific way to help them with science fair projects, robotics projects, or making arts and crafts projects.

CNC machines can cut or machine intricate detail, and do it very quickly. You've probably admired some of those intricate wall hangings that are cut with a jig saw.... where the craftsman spent literally hundreds of hours drilling through the workpiece, detaching the saw blade, threading the blade through a hole, reattaching the blade, making the cut, and repeating the process. A CNC router can do the same work in a fraction of the time, and much more accurately.

A CNC Router is probably the most versatile type of machine. It can make heavy cuts and do sculpting in three dimensions, or you can put a swivel knife cutter into the router chuck, and do vinyl sign and graphics cutting. With the proper software, you can digitize (or "Reverse Engineer" a part) using a probe mounted in the router chuck to "trace" the contours of a part. The computer will "Remember" the shape of your original, and then allow you to duplicate the part with the router, cutting it from a block of wood or other material.

And a CNC router can be the start of a part-time.. or even full time business. You can carve beautiful wooden signs, cut out wooden toys, or model airplane or railroad components. You can carve original patterns, and make molds from them, to produce figurines, plaques, picture frames or other cast parts. Have you admired wooden clocks ? A CNC router is a great way to make one... or dozens. If you are a frustrated inventor, you can cut mechanical parts for prototypes, from a range of materials including wood, plastics, aluminum, composite materials like carbon fiber laminate, or printed circuit board material.

So how do you get started? A great place to begin is with the ABC's of CNC video. This two hour long DVD takes you through the entire CNC workflow... starting with the basics of machine designs, G Code, CAD and CAM software, and finally through the actual cutting process. You'll see sample parts start as a design, sketched on a napkin, taken through CAD software, and on to the Computer Assisted Machining (CAM) software where the actual cutting paths to make the part are created. The output from the CAM program then goes to the actual machine controller, which converts the digital information into actual motion... to cut the part.

You do not need to be an electronics whiz... nor a computer programmer... nor a machinist. The ABC's of CNC video will show you where to start, where to look for parts and resources, and how to put it all together.. to make your OWN CNC machine. It's fun and rewarding. It will open up a whole new world of precision, speed, and repeatability.

Safe Step Stools

Are you looking for a safe step stool to use? Then you probably want compare a couple of different makes & models to find the one that works best for you.

Which one is best for a kitchen step stool? That depends on which features are most important to you. So you may want to ask yourself, "What am I trying to accomplish in the kitchen." This simple question and a little investigation into the features of each step stool will help you choose the right kind for your kitchen that works best for you.

Lowes Kids Workshop

Wooden

Are wooden steps the best choice for a kitchen step? Let' see, this wooden can come painted in different themes or characters, you can get them made for children with Mickey Mouse or your childs favorite cartoon character painted on them. The one for childrens are smaller and lighter so your child can drag them around easily. Kids steps are usually made to handle a maximum load of about 150 pounds, so we're talking about young children. The wooden one made for children are not a safe step for your kitchen! Check the load rating!!! If it looks like it was made for a child, it probably shouldn't be used in your kitchen.

Folding

The most popular steps for kitchen use are folding. Why? For 2 main reasons: First they are the cheapest to purchase and they fold up to store, taking up very little space. You can find the folding steps in most hardware stores like Lowes or Home Depot and in department stores like Target and Wal-Mart. But buyers beware of these folding step stools!! The load rating on these steps is very low, typically between 150-225 pounds. If you stand on the second rung of the folding steps and lean over, you may find yourself on the floor. These type are not very stable or sturdy.

Plastic

Most plastic step stools are single piece construction, but I've seen 1 or 2 that do collapse for storage purposes. The most popular of the plastic kind is the Rubbermaid brand. The reason why is they are easy to find at your local hardware or department store and they are cheaply priced. Be absolutely sure to check out the load rating on these Rubbermaid before you get it home to find out it is too flimsy for your needs.

Metal

Metal type come in various shapes and sizes for different industries, but they all have one glaring problem, the rubber pads used on the bottom the legs will wear through, making it far too easy for this to slide out from under you. The second problem with metal type is the welds that hold the legs to the step are prone to break or at best, crack. Making this unstable, and a huge liability waiting to happen.

Writing for Children: What Drives a Children's Story?

If someone were to ask you what it is about some of your favorite books that you find most compelling, you may be inclined to answer with something like, "It has an exciting plot," "It's fast paced," or some other answer about the storyline. However, upon deeper reflection, you may come to realize that what's often the most compelling about certain stories is the emotional drive behind the primary storyline. Sure, an interesting plot line is essential for a good story, but what's behind the steering wheel of that plot? What's really driving the story?

For many readers, a strong emotional connection to the characters and their situations is what keeps them reading. After all, if you don't care about the characters, you're much more likely to stop turning the page and instead turn to a different book altogether. This concept, of finding ways to allow the reader to connect to the character, is used throughout literature and movies. It's how authors make you care about the "bad guy" in some books and movies. This idea is not limited to adult literature, however. Compelling children's stories also allow the reader (or listener) to enter the story and connect with characters and situations.

Kids Workshop

Think about some of your favorite childhood stories. What was it about those stories that made you want to read them over and over? Even stories for the youngest child can create a connection. "Goodnight Moon," the classic board book by Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd is one such example. Initially, the story seems very simple. A young rabbit boy says goodnight to the various things in his room before going to sleep. However, in doing so, the story depicts a safe and comforting environment for the child, an atmosphere that resonates with young children--and a reason why this story has remained popular for so many years.

Stories for older readers can accomplish the same thing. The idea is to keep the story and concepts age appropriate, as is done in "Goodnight Moon." Judy Blume's "Blubber" addresses issues that many kids can relate to, such as feeling like an outsider and being bullied. More recently the Harry Potter books deal with an assortment of issues that resonate with young readers, such as feeling different, finding one's inner strength, and facing one's fears.

Effective stories for children often appear to be simple stories; however, a closer look reveals that these stories address complex issues that many young people can relate to on an emotional level--and this is what keeps readers coming back for more. How do you do this in your own writing? To drive your story, think about what drives your character. What does he or she want? Why is he or she acting in a particular way, or going to a particular place? What does your character hope to achieve? By asking yourself a few questions about your character's motivation, you can find your own in writing the story--and this will help motivate children to read your story.

Why Fathers Matter to Kids

The family is the foundation of life.  It is the basic organization and where family members learn what is expected of them in life and their part in the scheme of things. It is in the family setting that children understand their external environment.  Young children and teenagers  figure out who and what they are by what they are shown by example as well as being told verbally and non verbally by important adults.

The lessons taught by fathers and other male role models, even in the most casual level builds the confidence and self esteem of young people. The very presence of a dad who cares sends important messages not only about life and society in general, but the individual child's capabilities  and interests is a precious gift. While children of any age and gender benefit from having a Father figure, it is especially important for boys to have a male role model validate their experiences.

Kids Workshop

What Happens if There Is No Masculine Role Mode Present

It takes a village to raise a child, and if the village is made up of relatives, great.  If not, then form a "tribe" that will care for your children. Involve your children  in hobby interests, Sunday School, sports, scouting and after school activities.  Make sure there are safe, strong, and kind men available to teach, mentor and be-friend the child. They need to see how resilient adults handle life and contribute to make the world a better place.

You will be surprised as children are exposed to different  people how the child is able to then organize and make sense of the external and internal experiences and decide if they have power to change the future or if they are a victim of the past.

I have mentioned in other articles the value of volunteering as a family in order to meet other families who have similar standards and interests.

Good Fathers Keep their Promises

In order to instill trust in others, a mature person keeps their promises, as much as humanly possible. Kids hear words, but more importantly, they see actions. Fathers and role models encourage the children of the world by their presence, their interest, and their involvement in their children's lives.  it is not so much what they say, but what they do.

Fathers Predict the Future of their Children

Studies have repeatedly found that the dad is the most accurate fortune teller of what their children will be.  If the man who is the role model or father figure says; "You are a lazy slob. You are dumb. You will never make it." and other negative messages, the child internalizes and believes this important authority figure.

However, conversely, if the male authority figure encourages, compliments and inspires the child to try and to appreciate success, the child grows up confident and courageous.

Give the gift of Presence, not Presents

If you are a father reading this article, then be present with your children.  If you are not physically able to be present, then write them notes, telephone or send them e-messages which encourage and support them. Make them the focus of your attention.  Be a parent, guide and teacher.  Your children are counting on you.

CNC Milling Machine - A Must-Have Tool In Your Home Workshop For Accurate Cutting and Drilling Tasks

If you are a hobbyist who has a passion of woodworking, building models and complicated wall hangings, you would have to spend a long time cutting and drilling materials manually over a long period of time. Have you ever wondered whether there are any possible tools that can enhance the cutting and drilling process? If you have enough money to spend on such tools - a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) milling machine offers a precision cutting and drilling experience for both hobbyists and professionals alike.

Here are a few major features that a CNC milling machine has to offer:

Kids Workshop

1. It has the ability to create complex shapes (or model) - Unlike traditional milling machine, the modern one has a rotating cutter than cuts on the material (such as metal, plastic, or wood which is placed on the flat bed) easily in any directions based on your Computer-Aided-Design (CAD) design.

2. It has the ability to perform high precision cutting tasks - Since the CNC milling machine is digital controlled, it is possible to perform precise cutting and drilling tasks on the selected materials repetitively. High precision cutting is needed especially when you want those materials to be cut into exact sizes, and enhance the results of your craftship. In other words, achieving an excellent craftship is much easier with a digital controlled milling machine than manual one.

3. Faster cutting and drilling operations - You might have experienced delay in finishing your personal project because of the time-consuming cutting tasks when you are doing it alone manually, using the CNC milling machine can actually speed up the cutting process effectively and it would reduce the actual time of completion.

4. It can be used as an educational tool for your children - With giving them proper guidance and encouragement, having this particular machine can be perfect way to assist your children with school projects such as their arts and crafts related projects. Apparently, it can be an ideal way to spend some quality time with your children and to keep them from becoming a couch potato.

5. It is extremely safe to perform such high-risk cutting operations than it is performed on a manual basis - The operator of the CNC milling machine is usually stood or located far from the cutting area when the machine is operating and performing its duties.

6. It can store a library of your previous and current designs that you can use it repeatedly - You can actually retrieve your old designs and perform similar tasks as many times as you want. In most cases, most amateurs would easily give up in completing your project because that they could not endure the repeated cutting operations by doing it manually.

Even if you are a hobbyist, your craftship can be improved if you inculcate high precision in cutting materials for your project. It can affect the good quality of your masterpiece that could be possibly favored by other hobbyist or enthusiast - hence, you can consider turning your hobby into a profitable business.
