Why Is It So Hard To Get Kids To Cooperate?

Many parents have problems getting their kids to cooperate and do what they are supposed to do. It seems as if it always an uphill battle. Many parenting experts agree that children do have valid explanations for why they don't obey.

Here are 5 reasons why kids might not be listening:

Kids Workshop

1. What Time Is It?

It is important to note the time that we ask children to do stuff. Children are less compliant when they are tired, hungry or even bored. When children come off the bus from school, the last thing they want to do is do their homework or their chores. They need some time to unwind. It helps to think of how it feels when you come home from work. One of my friends has an agreement with her husband, when they come home after a long day, each of them gives the other about 5-10 minutes to catch their breath and unwind.

2. Are They All Ears?

I know that when I am reading a really good book or get absorbed in my writing, I am in another world. My kids and husband have to get in my face in order to get my attention. When kids are busy playing, watching TV or on the Wii, they really might not have even heard you when you called. You are really just not "getting through."

3. But I Can't Do It!

Children might not listen if the request is too hard for them. We need to think in terms of a child's age and ability. For example: Can my 8 year old sit for an hour in Temple? Can my 5 year old put her sheets on her bed? If we give children jobs that they can realistically do we will see more cooperation.

4. That's Crazy!

Children do not like to do things that do not make sense to them. "Why do I have to shower? I just did last week!" "Why do I have to know geometry, when am I ever going to use it?" In a child's mind these are good reasons for not doing what they need to do.

5. Are We Having Fun Yet?

Do you spend most of your time asking your child to getting your child to do stuff? Children need downtime, lazy days, and lots of play in order to have the energy they need to listen.
